University of Utah star conerback Sean Smith announced today that he will forgo his final year of college football to declare for the upcoming NFL draft.

The 6-foot-3, 210 pound Smith has already begun training for the NFL scouting combine in Fort Lauderdale, FL at the Perfect Competition training center.  Smith is hoping to run in the high 4.3 or low 4.4 40-yard dash at the combine in February.  Currently, scouts and analysts have Smith going in the late first round or early second round of the upcoming NFL draft.

Smith was a star and anchored one of the best defenses in the nation in 2008.  The Ute defense ranked 11th in rushing defense and total defense, and 12th in scoring defense.  He finished a great season with the Utes in the Sugar Bowl where he shut down Freshman All-American Julio Jones, 5 tackles, one for loss with Smith forcing a fumble on a 10-yard sack.

Smith led the Utes and tied for the Mountain West Conference lead with five interceptions, one which he returned for a touchdown.  His 151 yards on interception returns led the league.  Smith also led Utah in pass breakups with nine and had 46 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, and a forced fumble.

Utah Coach Kyle Whittingham knows it's a big loss to the program but appreciates what Smith and Kruger have meant to the team.

"We appreciate Paul and Sean's hard work and dedication to the University of Utah football program," coach Whit said.  "They have been instrumental to our success and, although we are sorry to see them leave, we wish them nothing but the best in their NFL endeavors.  They will always be a part of the Utah football family."
